  • Winnie Odinga dedicated her election to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) to 49 staunch supporters who lost their lives in 2017.

In a statement on Thursday evening, November 17, Winnie, the youngest daughter of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, acknowledged the supporters who stood by them over the years.

According to Winnie, it was unfortunate that the 49 individuals lost their lives while welcoming Raila back into the country.

The EALA MP was lucky to have survived the ordeal.

Further, she shared photos of a car she travelled in on that fateful day. One of the photos showed a windscreen damaged in the commotion with the police.

Winnie promised to continue advocating for people’s rights at the regional Parliament based in Tanzania.

“Five years ago exactly today, as we left JKIA, 49 lives were lost. I am still here by God’s grace. Fast forward to today, I am elected to be a member of the EALA.

“I am humbled. I am grateful. I am ready. This is for all the ones we lost on the way. There is no me without you,” Winnie stated.

The communication expert penned the emotional message hours after being elected to EALA.

She garnered 247 votes from votes cast in both the Senate and the National Assembly.

Winnie was elected from the Azimio la Umoja coalition alongside former Kieni MP Kanini Kega, Mombasa businessman Suleiman Shahbal and Kalonzo Musyoka’s son, Kennedy Kalonzo.

A  section of Kenya Kwanza leaders had pledged to lobby their troops to vote against her candidature.
