A video of Nairobi captured by a motorist driving through the Nairobi Expressway elicited debate as Kenyans and social media users across the world debated over the one-minute clip.
The video taken by photographer Kamil Zaki showcased some of the buildings and infrastructure along the expressway from Mombasa road all the way to highway sections in Westlands.
With the video edited for aesthetic value, many wondered whether the video was indeed captured in Nairobi or in another country.
In particular, a number of Kenyan online users opined that they thought the video was captured in either China or the Philipines due to the filters used in the video which portrayed cool weather conditions.
However, common features in Nairobi such as the Global Trading Center (GTC) and the Britam Building in Upperhill quelled the debate.
“The video is good but the filter on it makes it look like it was shot in some Asian countries,” Soi Edgar stated.
On the other hand, a number of users marvelled at the scenery of the capital with other Africans promising to visit the country to witness it for themselves.
Social media users outside the country also took the opportunity to debate whether Nairobi was the best in infrastructural development in the continent.
“Look at the infrastructure. They are also up there with South Africa and other cities such as Dubai,” Thehobo Thelii from South Africa opined.
“Nairobi, Kenya is a bright spot in sub-Saharan Africa. Making headlines for travel, talent, and technology,” Shaun Maende stated.
However, other online users also debated the unseen challenges facing the city that was showcased in the video.
‘You have not seen the parking lot below the road you just drove on,” Jack Siro commented on Twitter.
“We don’t dispute the glorification of that elevated highway. We, however, take issue with the fact that you are misleading others into thinking that that may possibly be the only thing Nairobi has to offer,” Tweep GoodguyChogu opined.
