A video of four police officers pinning a man on the ground with one of them kneeling on his chest is factual.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on Thursday, February 16, a man who filmed the clip confirmed that it happened at the Kasarani Stadium during a football match that took place on Wednesday, February 15.
He explained that at 3 p.m, the man who is a fan of one of the teams breached the security protocol and accessed the stand where the manager and players were.
“The match was between Mathare and Kariobangi Sharks. He jumped over the barrier and headed towards the Mathare stand. Two of the officers chased after him,” the witness stated.
He explained that the football fan was shielded from the cops by the team’s head coach who explained that it was a normal occurrence for sports fanatics.
However, the man was not pleased by the response of the police officers and insulted the cops.
“He felt that the police were on his case for no reason and claimed that they just wanted to solicit a bribe from him. This rattled one of the officers who ordered his removal from the stadium,” the witness reported.
The suspect then attempted to run away from the officers but was caught almost immediately.
“When they caught him, they tried to pin him down. One of the cops placed his knee on his chest and forced his club into his mouth to stop him from screaming.
“The other officers tried to hold him down and it was during that process that his clothes came off. The fans at the stadium began shouting in protest,” he stated.
The informant added that it took the intervention of a senior police officer from the Kasarani Police Station to have the officers let the man go.
Following the publication of the video, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) reached out to the post’s publisher. IPOA was yet to issue a statement on the incident by the time of publication.
