Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja on Thursday, December 1, announced a raft of measures aimed at decongesting Nairobi City.
The governor was speaking after the court halted his directive on long distance matatus to relocate from Central Business District (CBD).
While respecting the court ruling, Sakaja announced that he was unbowed in his quest to ease traffic within the city.
“We have a number of plans in motion to decongest the city and we have started with Tuk-Tuks.”
“Tuk-tuks will no longer operate at archives and its environs, they will operate further down at OTC and even there they will be allowed two at a time,” Sakaja told members of the press.
According to the county boss, the space created by moving tuk-tuks out of the city will be paved for pedestrian use.
The governor added that he will limit the number of Saccos that are operating within the CBD.
Sakaja decried that hawkers were congesting Nairobi streets, warning of drastic measures to contain the situation.
“Hawkers have overcrowded the streets by occupying lanes illegally inconveniencing pedestrians.”
“I have spoken with their leaders and we have agreed to construct 32 backstreet lanes where they will be able to conduct their business,” Sakaja announced.
The lanes will be occupied by 5000 hawkers who will be registered by the county government. They will occupy allocated slots in shifts so that every hawker can get opportunity to sell their wares.
The county government also constructed Green Park bus terminus that aims to decongest the city. In an earlier statement, Sakaja had announced that all long distance PSVs from Western Kenya, would use the park.
“All PSV SACCOs and PSV companies offering services between Nyanza, Western, North Rift, South Rift, and Central Rift who are currently operating from Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) will be relocated to the Green Park Terminus in the first phase,” Sakaja had announced on November 28.
The decision was rescinded by High Court which ordered that the current status quo remains until December 13.
