  • President William Ruto on Monday, December 12, announced 11,000 employment opportunities for the youth in Nairobi in place of the defunct Kazi Mtaani project.

Speaking at Nyayo Stadium during the Jamhuri Day celebrations, Ruto affirmed that the youth would be part of a green army formed to realise the dream of increasing tree cover in Nairobi county.

“We will work with the government of Nairobi towards the greening of our city.  Sakaja and I have agreed to hire 11,000 young people; those that were working under the old Kazi Mtaani, ” Ruto remarked.

The president called on other county bosses to join in the programme in line with the government’s plan to increase tree cover in the country,

Ruto also instructed the Ministry of Interior to work with the 45,000 local administrators including chairpersons of Nyumba Kumi to ensure that the goal is achieved.

He reiterated that the state targets to plant 15 billion trees across the country in a bid to manage the effects of climate change.

While appreciating the talent among the youth and the power of content creation, Ruto revealed that he held discussions with Meta on how the youth could earn from their creativity.

“I have spoken directly to Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram, to monetise content for our digital entrepreneurs that will exponentially multiply incomes and create employment opportunities for others.

“I am impressed and encouraged by the power of monetisation and remote jobs. This is the way to the future,” he remarked.

The Head of State made a special tribute to 29-year-old Kenyan software engineer Nelly Cheboi who was named the 2022 CNN Hero of the Year.

“We congratulate Cheboi for creating computer labs for Kenyan children to access the opportunities in the digital world. Congratulations Nelly for connecting and Inspiring thousands of Kenyan children,” he remarked.
