Ruthless Efficiency at Politics But Lethargic in Service Delivery: Leaders Face Criticism

The recent impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his swift replacement with Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki has raised many eyebrows amongst  Kenyans regarding the efficiency of arms of the government.

The timeline of events starting with the filing of the special impeachment motion by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, its debate in Parliament, the hearing of the motion at the Senate that culminated in Gachagua’s impeachment and the speed at which courts issued orders has painted a picture of how quickly government can function when serving its interests.

This supposed ‘double standard’ has not gone unnoticed among the Kenyan population who have poked holes into the rapid conclusion of the entire process.

Many have lamented about the long periods of time that it takes the same government to implement various projects, the laxity at which some of the various Kenyan courts approach cases and the negligence by elected political leaders in tending to the needs of the citizenry.

Kenyans have taken to online platforms to voice their frustrations regarding this issue as they draw their own conclusions and are left in a state of “What could have been”

Kenyans were particularly drawn to the sheer haste that the National Assembly on Friday moved to approve the nomination of Interior Cabinet Secretary to the position of Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya.

Nation Media Group (NMG) journalist James Smart encapsulated the thoughts of many Kenyans in a post on X.

“The National Assembly has 60 days to process the next deputy president nominee, but they plan to do it in 60 minutes.”

For far too long, Kenyans have decried the numerous issues facing them. Currently, complaints regarding corruption as well as poor governance are rife as scandals rock the country left, right and center.

Investigation bodies and agencies have been accused of not delivering on their mandate and being used as instruments of political witch hunt and acting at the behest of the political elite.

The impact of the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests that morphed into a Gen Z revolution only served to ignite the public’s interest in matters to do with the leadership and governance of the country.

A developed urgency in familiarizing themselves with the inner workings of the Constitution and increased appetite for civic education has made Kenyans alive with the current affairs of the nation.

All eyes remain on the government as Kenyans eagerly observe whether it will maintain the same energy when it comes service delivery and competence.
