In less than 20 days, daring armed robbers exposed security hitches at Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi’s home and that of Public Service and Gender CS Aisha Jumwa.
The well-coordinated attacks saw senior government officers in President William Ruto’s administration lose property worth millions.
What puzzled Kenyans is how the robberies were orchestrated in a similar fashion, with the attackers fleeing in both incidents.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, former Nairobi County Communication Director, Jacob Elkana, who is also a security expert, opined that the incidents would have been inside jobs.
Defending his argument, Elkana noted how the robberies that were executed raised eyebrows. He, however, expressed confidence that the police would get to the bottom of both incidences to assure Kenyans of their security.
“Some are inside jobs. It’s rare to find such incidents in such homes which are known to be protected by armed police,” Elkana stated.
“We have the best DCI laboratories with the latest technologies. Let us give our authorities time to compile all shreds of evidence,” he insisted.
While explaining how the robbers easily gained entry to Mudavadi and Jumwa’s houses, the security expert advised individuals in top government positions to upgrade their security, including installing CCTV cameras with facial recognition features.
The first instance involved Mudavadi home, where two robbers jumped over a perimeter wall and accessed his home in Karen. They made away with a TV set and a gas cylinder.
CCTV camera at Mudavadi’s Karen home captured the two robbers revealing that one had covered his face with a plastic bag. The Chief Cabinet Secretary’s son was reportedly at home during the incident.
On Wednesday, February 15, three robbers raided Jumwa’s house in Loresho, Nairobi County, where they stole Ksh1.1 million, two laptops, three phones and gold jewelry.
Security experts opined that the robbery was executed the same way as had been at Mudavadi’s home. The sequence and flow were similar.
First, they cut the electric perimeter wall before gaining access to the house through the back door, which was not locked.
What raised concern was that the robbers went straight to the master bedroom upstairs where they stole gold jewellery and two laptops before storming her two daughters’ bedroom and robbing them of Ksh1.1 million, three mobile phones and jewellery of unknown value.
During the incident, one of CS Jumwa’s daughters was injured on the right knee. Preliminary reports indicated that police officers were not present during the raid.
Police officers are investigating both instances. Ruto is yet to issue a statement on the two robberies.
