  • Azimio La Umoja, on Friday, November 25, resolved to treat President William Ruto’s government as a rogue regime out to punish perceived political adversaries.

The resolution was reached after a day-long meeting between party leader Raila Odinga and Azimio allied governors and their deputies.

At the Naivasha meeting, Azimio La Umoja – One Kenya meeting leadership reviewed the nation’s state of affairs and highlighted six strategies for keeping President William Ruto’s government in check.

“The Kenya Kwanza Regime may have the appearance of legality but does not have the legitimacy from the people.

“We remind the people of Kenya that slavery may have been legal in some jurisdictions but remained repugnant to morality and justice. Colonialism may have been covered by the veneer of legality but was morally decadent and unjust,” Azimio La Umoja’s press statement read.

According to Azimio’s leadership, the coalition conducted a thorough analysis of the state of our economy, politics and human security and noted that the people of Kenya face tough times with no immediate end in sight.

    Safeguard Constitution

Therefore, the coalition decided to champion the causes of the people of Kenya and demonstrate their commitment to safeguarding the constitution, democracy and the rule of law.

“We commit to our constitutional mandate of serving the people in our respective counties.

    Engage Ruto’s Government

“In pursuit thereof, we shall engage the national government on the basis of mutual cooperation and consultation for the benefit of our people within the framework of the principles of the two levels of government being distinct and interdependent,” read Azimio’s statement.

Azimio also seemed not to have healed from the aftermath of the humiliating defeat in the August 2022 General Election.

    Quest for Justice

The coalition took time to revisit the pre and post-election activities, including the Supreme Court verdict that granted Ruto the valid chance to serve as Kenya’s fifth president.

“Rigging of elections may have been clothed with the cloak of legality, but it remains illegitimate and repugnant to justice.

“Our quest for electoral justice continues, and we will never allow the rigging of elections to become a new normal in our country.

    Condemn Government

Azimio vowed to continue criticising the government, accusing it of a witchhunt. One key issue that was cited was the ouster of four Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissioners (IEBC) officers, Juliana Cherera, Irene Masit, Justus Nya’ngaya and Francis Wanderi.

“To this end, we take serious notice of and condemn in the strongest terms possible the revenge mission the regime has embarked on against conscientious commissioners of the IEBC who had the audacity to reject the electoral coup perpetrated by the chair Wafula Chebukati while trying to sanitise the conduct of electoral thieves at the Commission,” Azimio resolved.

    Demand Chebukati’s Resignation

The coalition then demanded that Wafula Chebukati and the other two outgoing IEBC commissioners, Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye, should immediately proceed to their terminal leave to stop further cannibalization of the Commission.

    Serve With Dignity

Azimio La Umoja – One Kenya Coalition also agreed to serve people diligently within their counties and establish a culture of consultations among the allied governors.
