Police officers in Migori on Thursday launched investigations into a mysterious fire that razed down the county government’s accounts offices.
The fire, which broke out on Wednesday night, burnt down the facility moments after officers from the Auditor General’s office visited the county.
According to reports, the officials from the Auditor General’s office visited the county to probe an alleged embezzlement of Ksh78 billion during the 2020/2021 financial year.
While confirming the incident, an accounting officer who works at the Migori county government dismissed any links of the fire to a potential cover-up.
According to the officer, all the requisite accounting books were intact and the documents that were razed were those that were of little use.
“All the books that we use in accounting are all intact and it is utterly false to claim that the books were burnt to hide something,” noted the county official.
“I want to assure you that we the members of the county assembly do not put anything under the table and make sure that all the perpetrators of the fire are brought to book.”
The latest tragic occurrence in Migori adds up to a series of fire incidents witnessed in different regions across the country, particularly in schools.
In a recent fire tragedy, three people died after an inferno broke out in the Lunga Lunga slums of Nairobi.
The fire, which broke out on Monday, September 16 at around 8 pm, began at the house where the three individuals were residing, burning them beyond recognition.
During the night incident, firefighters from the Nairobi County government arrived at the scene and put out the fire with the aid of the locals.
Police officers who spoke to the press noted that they had launched a probe into the fire tragedy.
