  • Police in Kisii County arrested a teacher manning an examination centre after he was accused of helping two suspects escape from a toilet at Nyamonaria Secondary in Kisii.

The cops investigating the case raided the latrines only to find the two scampering for safety. They intensified the search for two duo revising a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education-KCSE exam paper inside the toilet.

According to police reports, the two sneaked into the school to illegally assist a candidate in the centre ahead of a mathematics paper.

During their search, the police found two smartphones, school attendance registers, exercise books and a four-figure mathematical log book.

By the time of this publication, the teacher was in police custody, awaiting a conclusive report on the matter.

Kisii County Director of Education Pius Ong’oma confirmed the arrest of the centre manager and further indicated that investigations into possible examination malpractice were underway.

In addition, the county director assured that the manager would be replaced as the education officials strived to ensure integrity while administering the national examination.

The incident happened as the main national exams entered the second week since commencement.

To prevent malpractice and irregularities, including cheating, the Ministry of Education announced a raft of deterrent measures at the onset.

Among them was banning unauthorized phones within examination centres.

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) also announced that all mid-morning papers would be locked up within exam rooms to prevent the preexposure of papers.

“We will leave nothing to chance as far as the administration of national exams is concerned,” Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu stated.

Further, the Ministry collaborated with the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology to prevent cheating through telecommunications applications.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations was also tasked with tracking suspects selling papers on social media platforms.
