The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested traffic police officers in Nairobi for allegedly collecting bribes.

The officers were apprehended along Moi Avenue Primary and Junior School in Nairobi’s central business district (CBD).

Images and videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke captured EACC detectives, dressed in plain clothes, arriving at the scene, prompting the two traffic officers to flee.

However, their attempt to outrun the detectives proved futile, as they were swiftly cornered. One officer was pinned to the ground near a crowd barrier and immediately handcuffed.

There was drama during the arrest after members of the public thronged the area while castigating the officers for collecting bribes from motorists using the road.

”No more bribes for you in the form of Ksh100, Ksh50, Ksh200, and Ksh30 will be no more for you,” one of the bodaboda riders at the scene of the arrest shouted.

Furthermore, EACC officers faced challenges in effecting the arrest as members of the public momentarily blocked them, eager to record videos and take photos of the incident.

Some onlookers even demanded a share of the alleged bribes collected by the officers. However, the detectives urged them to resume their activities, assuring them that there was no money to distribute.

Shortly after, the officers, including a biker cop, were bundled into the back seat of a nearby sedan. The scuffle escalated when one officer insisted on being freed from the handcuffs, attempting to break free and exit the vehicle.

He was quickly restrained and transferred to a waiting maroon Honda CRV as the crowd cheered on, praising the detectives for their swift action.

”Thieves, that is a very good job done; put them in there and go with them,” a voice from the crowd cheered.

EACC was yet to state the fate of the arrested officers at the time of publishing this article.

On January 28, the investigative agency released a report indicating that the National Police Service and National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) were among the most corrupt institutions in Kenya.
