  • Nation Media Group’s NTV, on Saturday, December 3, unveiled Ibrahim Karanja as a news anchor, a few days after the exit of seasoned media personality Mark Maasai.

Karanja made his debut during the NTV at One bulletin to mark the beginning of a new era in his career in the media.

The media house took to its social media platforms to congratulate Karanja shortly after his maiden bulletin.

Friends and colleagues also joined to send congratulatory messages to the news anchor.

“At exactly one O’clock on this day of December (2022) you are just in time for NTV at One, my name is Ibrahim Karanja.

“Let’s get the show started,” a valiant Karanja introduced himself before the glaring cameras to mark a new frontier for him.

His elevation to the new job came five months after his switch to Nation Media Group (NMG) from rival media giant Standard Media Group.

Karanja joined NTV in July 2022 after a four-year stint with KTN News. While at the Standard, Karanja worked as a correspondent in Nyeri and Nakuru, where he exhibited his prowess in reporting on various topics.

Besides his role as a correspondent, the Kilimo School alumnus was recognized for moderating and hosting high-profile interviews in both media organizations, including Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and several county heads.

His debut as an anchor came at a time when NMG is laying off its staff in a bid to adapt to the changing digital landscape.

Reports stated that the fate of veteran journalists was hanging in the balance as they risked being affected by the retrenchment.

Also worth noting, NMG overhauled its management structure in November 2022, with former Citizen TV Editorial Director Joe Ageyo assuming the same role.

The developments also came at a time when media houses are experiencing constraints which have culminated in mass lay-offs.

While responding to the concerning trend, Information, Communication and Technology Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo vowed to convene a meeting with media owners to deliberate on a plausible solution.

“The ministry is concerned about the surge in laying offs of journalists by media houses. While there are undeniably hard, and technology is changing, laying off journalists should not be the first line of intervention,” the CS stated.
