Embakasi North MP James Gaguya and his Embakasi Central counterpart Benjamin Gathiru alias Mejja Donk have been released after questioning at the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road.

The duo had been brought in Wednesday evening for questioning over their alleged sponsorship of the recent anti-tax protests that rocked the country and hit global headlines.

The legislators are the latest allies of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to be questioned over the alleged bankrolling of the Gen Z-led protests.

Speaking after their release, Gaguya dismissed the accusations terming them as nothing more than a witch hunt.

“Anybody with any evidence of any facts of any mistake we did should come very clear and tell us ‘this particular day, you finance ABCD’” Gakuya said.

The two were brought in for questioning as detectives worked to unmask the faces of people the government believes bankrolled the protests which occasionally turned chaotic leading to looting, destruction of businesses, injuries and deaths.

The government has admitted time and again that what started as a peaceful exercise of the constitutional right to picket by Gen Z was infiltrated by goons allegedly paid to cause mayhem and discredit the mass action.

“They have also asked whether we were buying T-shirts and water which I believe is just political and they are just politicking,” Mejjadonk said.

Gaguya added: “They should stop forthwith witch-hunting people by painting them as followers of somebody because we are not, we are members of UDA.”

Their questioning brings to five the number of Gachagua allies who have been questioned over their possible involvement in sponsoring the demonstrations.

On Tuesday, detectives questioned former Embakasi West MP Eric Theuri, former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu and Gachagua’s private secretary Munene wa Mumbi.

Wambugu currently works as a political advisor in the DP’s office of the DP while Theuri works as the youth advisor in the same office.
