  • A mother in Nyakongo village in Awasi, Kisumu County, was heartbroken after her Form Three daughter died at Awasi Girls Secondary school.

The deceased’s family claimed that the school and doctors at the hospital where her daughter was rushed after falling ill offered contrasting statements.

According to the mother, the school contacted her to urgently avail herself at around 11 pm on Monday, November 21, but on arrival, she found her daughter was already dead, a misfortune that she argued occurred before the school called her.

“Because it was late, I told the teacher to allow me to go the following morning, but she insisted that my daughter was unwell and I should go without fail. I had to look for a motorbike to help me get there,” she stated.

According to the family, medics alleged that the daughter was already dead by the time she arrived at the facility.

“The school told us they took her to hospital when she was still alive, although medics indicated that she had already passed on by the time they got to hospital,” detailed the girls’ uncle.

Reports alleged that the student developed complications at night after prep studies when students were heading to bed.

The heartbroken mother was yet to come to terms with the circumstances surrounding the student’s mysterious death. She urged the Ministry of Education to investigate the matter urgently.

“Teachers explained that she developed breathing complications when they were going to sleep, but my concern is why they did not call me when she was unwell,” the mother lamented.

The mother also faulted the school administration for asking her if her child had any health complications before, yet she recalled escorting a healthy daughter to school at the beginning of the term.

Education stakeholders assured her that the case would be fast-tracked. An autopsy was also scheduled to ascertain the cause of the death.

On November 15, a student at a school in Nairobi reportedly passed away after jumping from the balcony of her dormitory.

The student was alleged to have been depressed after her parents separated.
