Major General Jeff Nyagah is the Force Commander for the East African Community (EAC) Regional Force deployed to tackle rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Nyagah, in November 2022, was tasked with commanding soldiers drawn from East African countries, including the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
His role in DRC involves issuing directives to all soldiers with the mission’s success depends on his leadership.
General Nyagah’s role also involves meeting with leaders deployed to lead peace talks, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta, to end hostilities in the Northern part of DRC.
In DRC, General Nyagah also prepares the soldiers, including over 900 KDF forces, on tactics to employ while tackling the rebels.
Speaking on Friday, November 18, Nyagah reiterated that his first task was to give priority to the political process that was currently on course.
“We have been mandated to support DRC in collaboration with humanitarian agencies to continue humanitarian relief to populations affected by armed group activities, including Internally Displaced Persons,” he stated.
With his experience, Nyagah also vowed to protect the rule of law while executing his mandate.
“I appeal to the local population, the media, and the international community to support this important cause by the East African Community in the quest to restore peace and stability in the eastern DRC,” the commander stated.
His Past Experience
In February 2021, Nyagah was deployed to Somalia to lead the war against the terrorist group Al Shabaab.
He commanded the KDF forces and worked under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) until February 2022.
During that time, he collaborated with the Somalia National Army (SNA) in providing security and sustaining military pressure to degrade Al Shabaab.
“The significant progress made during Brig. Jeff Nyagah’s tenure reflects the strategic benefits of the close collaboration between AMISOM forces and the SNA,” AMISON described his achievement.
Nyagah was also credited for initiating Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) projects which were critical in addressing the basic needs of the local communities in Somalia.
The EAC army commander also spearheaded building relations between AMISON troops and the Somali communities.
