Masinde Muliro University Students, on Saturday, November 19, took to the streets in protest of the murder of a fellow student by unknown attackers.
The student’s body was dumped on the road in the Mahiakalo residential estate on Friday night, November 18.
Preliminary reports indicated that he was hit on the head with a blunt object.
Residents suspected that the student was killed elsewhere before the body was dumped on the crime scene.
“We are shocked by the killing of the young man. It appears he could have been murdered elsewhere and his body dumped here,” one resident claimed.
The area residents further lamented that the crime rate in the town had increased in the past weeks.
County Police Commander Mr Joseph Kigen detailed that the police collected the student’s body and ferried it to the Kakamega County mortuary pending a postmortem.
“We are still investigating the murder of the student in Mahiakalo. It appears, he was attacked as he headed home at night,” Kigen revealed.
Police also launched a manhunt for the suspects, arresting 15 in the process.
Kigen asked residents to help them identify the suspects to fast-track the investigations. The police boss expected the accused to be arraigned in court and charged with murder.
“We have intensified patrols in all parts of the town, and we need cooperation from the public to deal with the criminals,” Kigen disclosed.
Kakamega senator, Boni Khalwale, on Thursday, November 17, urged police to adopt a shoot-to-kill order on criminals terrorising city residents.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s Day Break, Khalwale insisted that law enforcement officers should be allowed to kill criminals once they capture them, a statement human rights activists vehemently opposed.
The outspoken senator also urged Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki to enhance and enforce strict orders against the gangs terrorising city residents.
