The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has introduced a new train on its Nairobi – Nanyuki route to ease transportation pressure as the holiday season kicks in.
In a statement on Monday, November 21, the Corporation announced that the new train would operate midweek between Tuesday and Wednesday.
The train will depart Nairobi for Nanyuki every Tuesdays at 9:00am and depart Nanyuki back to the city every Wednesday at 9:00am.
KRC further advised travelers to buy tickets at the Nairobi Central Station as well as Nanyuki Railway Station.
The new train will operate alongside the weekend one which departs Nairobi every Fridays and returns every Sunday.
The addition comes as pressure mounts on public transport ahead of the holiday season when most Kenyans travel upcountry for festivities.
Recently, Kenya Railways announced plans to add more compartments to the existing Madaraka Express trains due to high demand of travelers to the Coastal region.
The added compartments will be in operation throughout the holiday season depending on the consistency of their demand.
Travelers to Nanyuki part with Ksh1,000 for the first class while economy class costs Ksh200.
On the other hand, a first class ticket from Nairobi to Mombasa on SGR costs Ksh3,000 for adults and Ksh1,500 for economy class while that of economy class ranges between Ksh1,000 and Ksh500.
Applicants who wish to change their tickets can receive up to 70 per cent refunds provided they make the applications 48 hours before departure.
“For refund, you have to visit SGR terminus with your original ID. This should be done up to 48 hours before the indicated time of departure. Refund is subject to 30% deduction,” KRC advises.
