  • The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) on Tuesday, February 21, announced traffic disruption along the Southern Bypass.

A traffic advisory issued by Director General Kungu Ndung’u explained that the sections of the road would be closed intermittently to pave way for construction works.

Ndung’u explained that the road would be rehabilitated for an unspecified period of time.

“Disruptions will be experienced on the bypass starting February 21 due to planned surface dressing works along the Kikuyiu-bound carriageway,” the statement read in part.

Consequently, the Authority deployed traffic marshals who will guide motorists plying the route during the road maintenance exercise and apologised for any inconveniences caused.

“Motorists are, therefore, advised to approach the section with caution, follow the traffic flow signs and guidance through the roadworks in the area,” the advisory read in part.

Surface dressing is the rehabilitation of roads in good condition with high traffic in a bid to increase its longevity. It involves spreading stone chippings on a road section on which bitumen binder has been sprayed.

Contractors then use rollers to press the chippings onto the road. This not only improves skidding resistance but also protects the road against damage by still and running water.

Notably, motorists were asked to consider using alternative routes to beat the traffic jam along the highway.

Some of the routes include using Mombasa Road through Nyayo Stadium for motorists heading to Lang’ata or using Mombasa Road through James Gichuru for those heading to Kikuyu.

Those heading to Ngong’ can use the main highway, take a detour at Nyayo or Haile Selassie Avenue and proceed to Kenyatta National Hospital where they will offload to Ngong’ Road.

The Southern Bypass connects Mombasa Road at Airtel to Kikuyu through Langata.
