KBC Beats, KTN, Ties With NTV in Latest Ranking

  • Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) grew in TV viewership between 2021 and 2022, overtaking stations such as KTN Home, KTN News, Inooro TV and K24 TV. 

    According to the latest report by the Media Council of Kenya titled State of Kenya’s Media in 2022 report, KBC grew from 3 percent in 2021 to 12 percent in 2022. 

    MCK attributed the rise to increased subscriptions owing to the World Cup period that occurred between November 2022 and December 2022.

    Citizen TV led the rankings with 36 percent, followed by KBC and NTV which tied at 12 percent. Standard Group Limited’s KTN Home and KTN News followed with 11 percent and 7 percent respectively. 

    Inooro TV was sixth with 6 percent, K24 had a 5 percent viewership while Ramogi TV rounded up the top eight with 3 percent. 

    Drawing comparisons with 2021 data from MCK, Citizen TV increased its ratings from 27 percent to 36 percent in 2022. NTV also increased from 9 percent to 12 percent while KTN News also recorded an increase from 4 percent to 7 percent. 

    Stations such as Inooro TV, KTN Home, and K24 TV maintained their viewership at 6 percent, 11 percent and 5 percent respectively. 

    MCK also pointed out that the most watched TV stations after analysis conducted in January 2023, indicate Citizen TV is ahead with 38 percent, followed by NTV at 13 percent and KTN Home at 12 percent. 

    Radio Stations

    Radio Citizen and Radio Jambo stood out as the most listened-to radio stations in 2022 with 18 percent and 16 percent respectively. 

    Radio Maisha followed with 12 percent, Milele FM (8 percent), Inooro FM (4 percent), Kameme FM (4 percent), Radio Taifa (4 percent) and Classic 105 (3 percent).

    In 2021, Radio Citizen still led with 12 percent, Radio Jambo came second with 10 percent and Kameme rounded up the top three list with 7 percent. 

    Websites

    Kenyans.co.ke emerged among the most-read news websites with a 4 percent readership- making its inaugural appearance on the list. 

    Tuko.co.ke topped the list with 28 percent followed by Citizen Digital (22 percent) and Nation. Africa (15 percent). 

    The survey was commissioned by MCK and conducted by Infotrak Research and Consulting Limited. The survey had a sample size of 3,331 respondents and covered all 47 counties. The interviews took place between December 8, 2022, and December 24, 2022.
