  • Nairobi governor, Johnson Sakaja, on Friday, November 18, announced the suspension of three county government officials following the collapse of a building in Kasarani on Wednesday, November 16.

He also forwarded their names to the Directorate of Criminal investigations for investigations.

Senior superintendent of building Michael Angoya, enforcement officer Catherine Wairimu and the chief superintendent of building in Nairobi Beatrice Kimathi, were given 10 days to defend themselves or face disciplinary action.

Sakaja claimed that the three were responsible for the approval of the building and failing to monitor its construction adequately.

He added that the trio would be charged if found to be culpable of negligence in their mandate.

In addition, Sakaja insisted that the developer was culpable for the tragedy that claimed three construction workers’ lives.

“The county has also forwarded the names of the officers to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for further investigations,” the governor noted in a statement sent to newsrooms.

“If I find any officer from Nairobi County culpable, at any point, for allowing construction of non-compliant developments to continue, they will go home and be charged.

Governor Sakaja further warned all county government officials involved in the process of approving buildings in Nairobi.

Any officer culpable of irregularly approving structures would be fired and subjected to stern action.

On Wednesday, November 16, the county chief stated that the building had been flagged for non-compliance with the National Construction Authority (NCA) standards.

He as well alleged that impunity among the county officials led to the irregular approval of the structure, which cost the lives of three people.
