The Kenya African National Union (KANU) Party on Friday, February 10, ratified an immediate expulsion of Nick Salat as secretary general.
In a meeting chaired by party leader Gideon Moi, the National Executive Council of KANU met in Mombasa to deliberate to decide the fate of Salat.
“That the report of the National Disciplinary Committee recommending the immediate expulsion of Hon. Nick Salat from the position of the Secretary-General of the party on account of gross misconduct and violation of the party constitution is unanimously adopted,” KANU explained.
KANU noted that the party needed to appreciate the country’s political situation and recognise the party’s centrality in the current political dispensation.
NEC also mandated the national chairman Gideon Moi to propose, for deliberations and adoption, suitable individuals to fill the vacant national positions, including that of the Secretary-General, on an interim basis.
“The NEC mandated the National Elections Board to immediately develop a mechanism for conducting nationwide grassroots elections before the end of the year to revamp the party’s grassroots structures and enhance national support,” read a statement by KANU.
As part of the reform process, the Kenya African National Union instituted activities within the party to infuse operational efficiency. The NEC approved the formation of various technical committees to institutionalize critical operational facets of the party.
The National Executive Council of KANU also mandated the Office of the National Treasurer and the Secretariat to carry out an inventory of all its properties across the country and streamline their administration and management in strict compliance with the Political Parties Act, 2011.
On Thursday, December 15, KANU suspended Secretary-General Nick Salat over an alleged violation of the Party’s Constitution.
“You (Salat) are hereby suspended forthwith from carrying out and/or performing your duties as the Party’s Secretary-General pending the determination of the disciplinary proceedings,” Gideon Moi noted in December 2022.
KANU will commence replacing Salat through what the party termed a transparent process.
Salat had worked with the party for over two decades in various capacities, including as the Secretary-General, from which he was suspended.
