Wiper party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, accused President William Ruto of planning to win the 2027 polls by taking control of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
While speaking during a book launch in Machakos on Saturday, December 3, Kalonzo accused Ruto of supporting the purge against the four IEBC commissioners to instal other officers who would bow to his demands in the 2027 Presidential General Election.
While accusing him of dictatorship, the Azimio Principal indicated that Ruto’s sustained attacks had forced commissioner Justice Nyang’aya to resign.
“Look at this trend of taking us back into the days of dictatorship. I saw one of the commissioners could not take it, he resigned,” Kalonzo stated.
The former Vice President further argued that Ruto’s decision to suspend commissioners Juliana Cherera, Nyang’aya, Irene Masit and Francis Wanderi undermined the electoral agency’s independence.
“Are you preparing to run in 2027 and what type of election would it be if the electoral commission would be a one-man show?” Kalonzo wondered.
His sentiments were echoed by Narc Kenya Party leader, Martha Karua, who lamented that Ruto’s administration was retrogressive.
“But what is very disturbing about politics today is that the more we change, the more things remain the same and I have realised the transformation never ends,” Karua insisted.
Ruto suspended the four commissioners and formed a tribunal headed by Justice Aggrey Muchelule.
Other members in the tribunal announced through a Gazette Notice dated Friday, December 2, included Carolyne Kamende Daudi, Linda Gakii Kiome, Mathew Njaramba Nyabena and Col. (Rtd.) Saeed Khamis Saeed.
Justice Muchelule-led tribunal will consider the petition seeking the removal of the four IEBC commissioners who disowned the August 9 Presidential results.
After 30 days, the tribunal will submit its report, which will seal the fate of the commissioners.
