  • Irene Masit was the only surviving member of the infamous “Cherera 4” as of Thursday, December 8, following the resignations of Juliana Cherera, Justus Nyang’aya and Francis Wanderi as commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

    Consequently, she was the only commissioner poised to face the Tribunal appointed by President William Ruto to probe their conduct during the August 9 elections following a petition filed at the National Assembly seeking her ouster.

    Before becoming IEBC commissioner, she was a board member of the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF)

    Masit currently chairs the Legal, Compliance and Political Party Liaison Committee and the Leadership and Integrity Committee.

    The lawyer has 25 years of work experience in Government and NGOs with experience in Finance, Governance, Management and Public Administration.

    Masit is a member of several international organisations, including the International Certified Addiction Professional and the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA).

    Net Worth

    As of 2021, Masit’s net worth totalled Ksh47 million. 

    During her vetting in September 2021, she listed a residential house at Ksh20 million, land in Eldoret worth Ksh5 million, another in Kajiado worth Ksh20 million and a vehicle that traded at Ksh2 million.

    Among her source of income were earnings from the NCDF Board and National Assembly Select Committee.

    The income, she disclosed, totalled Ksh2.8 million between 2019 and 2021. 

    Academic qualifications

    Irene Masit, who hails from Elgeyo Marakwet, is one of the most learned scholars in the country.

    She holds two Bachelor’s Degrees; a Bachelor of Law from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Arts in social work.

    Apart from her law degree, she also holds a Post Graduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law.

    The commissioner also holds a Masters in Strategic Human Resource Management from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.
