  • Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wa Muchomba recounted how former President Uhuru Kenyatta came to her aid after she was arrested in 2014.

Speaking during an interview on NTV, on Thursday, December 15, Wamuchomba narrated that her tribulations started when she took on an assignment to fight illicit brew in the country while working as a radio presenter.

Detectives reportedly arrested her after she completed the show, accusing her of incitement. Wamuchomba, who has previously worked at Inooro FM and Kameme FM, did not reveal her workstation at the time of the arrest.

“In 2014, I was arrested and arraigned in court. I got into a lot of problems but at least I can say there were tangible results.

“Uhuru rescued me from behind bars after being arrested for openly exposing illicit liquor businesses in Kenya. I loudly called out illicit brew manufacturers.

“From the third floor, where our studio was located, I would see the police officers waiting for me on the ground floor with their sirens on,” she explained.

The former Kameme FM presenter added that Uhuru encouraged her mission despite warning her that she was at fault.

“He told me that I was wrong for the expose’ I had conducted on air and was unlawful,” she stated.

He, however, instructed her to continue the campaign through her radio show, as he also advocated against the consumption of illicit local brews.

“You incited the country, and you should be behind bars, but since you are doing it for the generations (to come), we will see how we can help you.

“Tomorrow when you report to the station, do it again because you are also helping me,” she quoted the former President.

According to Wamuchomba, Uhuru was wary of leading the campaigns targeting his own Central Kenya residents.

“He didn’t want to be seen like he was supporting his people in isolation and hence wanted someone else to do it,” she uttered.

After two days of the live campaigns, Uhuru invited all MPs from Central Kenya and instructed them to follow Wamuchomba’s steps, marking the beginning of the crackdown on the illicit brew.

The lawmaker’s revelation came a day after the Interior Ministry Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki formed a multi-agency team to tame revellers who engage in excess consumption of alcohol during the festive season.
