  • Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen narrated how he rose the ladder of success within three months at his first job as an intern.

Murkomen used to earn Ksh21,000, an amount he was hesitant to accept, considering he had two degrees and was almost graduating with a third.

The CS spoke on Friday, December 9, while officiating the eighth annual East African School of Aviation (EASA) graduation.

“When I came from the US with two degrees and a Diploma in Law, I had a lot of passion as I went to different firms looking for a job,”  he narrated.

However, he was unlucky to secure a job with his high qualifications from some of the most reputable institutions across the globe.

“One day, a friend of mine called me and told me she could get me a job as an intern where I would earn Ksh21,000 per month,

“I considered the salary to be meagre owing to the ego I had, as a graduate with two degrees and waiting for a third one,” he narrated.

According to the CS, his friend instructed him to be diligent in his work and perform to the best of his abilities.

“In the workplace, I did my best, and after three months, the management was worried about losing a hardworking employee.

“They had no choice but to increase my salary. In three months, I moved from Ksh21,000 to Ksh200,000 a month,” the CS added.

Borrowing a leaf from his life, Murkomen urged the graduates to be open-minded in the job market and workplaces.

“There will be opportunities for those who are hardworking and disciplined. Let no one lie to you that chances are scarce,” he advised.

He congratulated the graduates stating, “I believe that the invaluable skills that you have acquired at this school and the passion and drive incubated within you will make you stand out above the rest in the job market.”
