A hit-and-run driver in Machakos caused another tragic accident in the county’s Central Business District.
While trying to escape to Nairobi County after hitting and killing a pedestrian along the Grogon area, the loose driver hit a boda boda rider before colliding with a truck resulting in the cars bursting into flames.
The incident occurred on Thursday night, February 16, and killed at least two people as police continued to inspect the area.
According to witnesses who spoke to the media, the driver was at high speeds before the accidents.
“It is unfortunate that a person can die in a fire in the middle of the city without getting help,” one resident stated.
Meanwhile, all the victims with severe injuries were rushed to the nearby medical facilities for assistance.
“These people died a painful death. Some of them were lacking parts of the body when the police retrieved their bodies from the car wreck,” narrated another resident.
“Residents tried to rescue the victims but the fire was too fierce, and the driver burnt to death,” another resident stated.
The Machakos sub-county police commander Moss Ndhiwa confirmed the incident adding that police had taken the matter under control.
Reportedly, the truck was ferrying cement in the area. Following the tragic incident, the area residents called upon the county government to ensure that emergency vehicles like ambulances and firefighters reached them in time.
According to the latest data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), at least 4.432 people died between January 1 and December 13 in 2022.
This was a rise from 4,271 casualties in 2021 during the same period.
Motorists have been cautioned against reckless driving and speeding on highways to avoid accidents. They have been urged to adhere to traffic rules and maintain sanity on the road.
