  • President William Ruto’s government, on Saturday, November 19, commissioned sanitation blocks worth Ksh500 million in the Kibra constituency.

The Ministry of Water and Sanitization moved to fulfil Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s agenda for Kibera residents.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta first launched the project in January 2021 to improve water and sanitation in the informal settlement to end the “flying toilets” menace.

The project includes the construction of water stations, ablution blocks, extending sewer lines and laying water pipes.

Kibra has for years had a dubious reputation for being one of the largest slums in Africa.

“I urge Kenyans, whenever you have such a facility, use it with dignity; sometimes we build toilets, but people don’t use them because of the culture,” Samwel Otieno, an officer at the Ministry of Water, stated.

The project will be undertaken by Kenya in collaboration with the French government and undertaken by the Athi Water Works Development Agency.

“Its impact and benefit are beyond measure, we will be calling for more collaboration,” Engineer Thuita Mwangi, Athi Water Works Agency CEO, noted.

The French Development Agency will also provide finances that will be used to construct Bio Centres in Kibera, Kawangware, Mukuru, Korogocho, Huruma, and Mathare settlements.

French Ambassador to Kenya, Arnaud Suquet, assured Kenyans that the project would be implemented per the agreement.

“It is an interesting infrastructure for the community. It belongs to the community, and you will make the best use of it,” Arnaud explained.

He also stressed the importance of marking World Toilet Day through initiatives that inspire actions on the global sanitation crisis.

World Toilet Day is an annual event celebrated on November 19.
