  • Former Inooro FM radio presenter and Kandara Member of Parliament (MP) aspirant Waithira Muithirania alleged that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party primaries were marred with irregularities.

The ex-radio siren claimed that she witnessed other aspirants bribing voters with cash and foodstuff as they both battled to succeed Alice Wahome, who was appointed Water CS.

In a new revelation, Waithira asserted to have photo evidence and the names of the culprits recorded conducting the offences in the county, Murang’a, and had sufficient evidence to prove her case before the party elections board.

Waithira asked UDA to ensure swift action against those guilty of shady dealings in the nomination process.

The radio journalist declared her interest in the Kandara parliamentary seat after Wahome resigned to join Ruto’s Cabinet.

Before the nominations, aspirants were invited for a meeting by the UDA officials where the Party National Elections Board Chairman, Anthony Mwaura, assured them of a transparent, free and fair exercise.

“We have no preferred candidate in Kandara, the one who will be elected by the people of Kandara on November 26 will be backed by the party in the by-election,” Mwaura assured.

Waithira was among two women battling it out with 12 male aspirants for the UDA ticket in the by-election slated for January 5, 2023.

It was perceived that whoever clinched the highly coveted UDA ticket would have a head-start in bagging the Kandara seat.

The constituency has 105,148 registered voters spread out in Ng’araria, Muruka, Kagundu-ini, Gaichanjiru, Ithiru and Ruchu wards.

Political temperature flared in the constituency ahead of the primaries, an issue that forced Murang’a County Commissioner Karuku Ngumo to deploy police to maintain peace.
