The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested Alfred Wafula Weswa, former Trans Nzoia County Assembly leader of the majority, for employing his daughter.
Weswa was arrested on Thursday, November 17, and arraigned at the Kitale Anti-Corruption Court.
“It is alleged that Alfred Wafula Weswa abused his office as the leader of the majority and Member of the Kitale County Assembly Service Board when he participated in the interview and employment of his daughter.
“He was then a Committee Clerk in the County Assembly and failed to disclose his interest as required by law,” EACC told the Kitale Anti-Corruption Court.
EACC further detailed that the accused, on August 31, 2015, failed to his interest and participated in the deliberations with respect to the shortlisting of his daughter for the position of Committee Clerk 1.
Some of the laws Wafula was accused of breaking were the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act 2003 and the Leadership and Integrity Act 2012.
The Leadership and Integrity Act 2012 dictate the principles of leadership and governance. It requires every State officer to respect and abide by the Constitution and the law.
While the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act of 2003 provides a legal framework to guide the fight against corruption and economic crimes in Kenya.
He, however, denied the charges against him. His case will be mentioned on December 7, 2022.
The former county staff was admitted to a bond of Ksh300,000 or a cash bail of Ksh100,000.
Notably, several government officials have been accused of hiring members of their families without passing through the right channels.
Recently, Meru county governor Kawira Mwangaza was on the receiving end after incorporating several members of her family into the county government.
Her husband, Murega Baichu, was appointed to two positions allegedly without a salary or remuneration.
