Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) shot dead a notorious city thug who had been terrorising residents in select Nairobi estates.
In a statement dated Wednesday, February 15, the detectives detailed how they hid in a drainage trench to apprehend the criminal while in the act.
Reportedly, the thug was headed for his usual night activities before he met with the sleuths.
According to the sleuths, the suspect defied orders to surrender and opened fire at the officers after realising that he had been cornered.
Unfortunately, he was shot dead as the shootout intensified in Mathare’s Mlango Kubwa area.
According to detectives, the suspect was part of an upcoming gang responsible for a series of armed robberies within Pangani, Mathare, Eastleigh, and Huruma areas.
“The retay falcon pistol loaded with two rounds of 9mm calibre and five spent cartridges were recovered following the shootout. Meanwhile, the thug’s body is lying at the City Mortuary awaiting post-mortem, identification, and collection,” DCI statement read in part.
Earlier reports indicated that the suspect had violently snatched a motorbike from a boda boda rider and robbed the man who was fending for his family.
Recently, the police and other security personnel have been on high alert to reduce the crime rate in the capital and its environs.
In a separate incident, four university students were arrested for being part of a criminal gang involved in a chain of robbery incidents in Juja, Ruai, and Kayole.
The teenagers aged between 18 and 19 years were arrested and several items were recovered from a house they shared including an imitation of a glock pistol, one empty pistol magazine, one white plastic fake mask and two stolen laptops among others
However, Interior Cabinet Secretary earlier announced that the crime rate had been reduced in Nairobi following several drastic security measures.
