  • A man was arrested after hacking a police officer with a jembe in Kisii.

The officer, who was hospitalised in the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH), also shot at the suspect in what area police boss termed as “self-defence”.

While confirming the unfortunate incident, the Masaba North Sub-County Police Commander Hassan Bashir narrated the events leading up to the attack on the police officer.

According to the commander, the officer of the rank of a senior Sergeant was on duty leading a team of other officers to arrest the suspect.

Police reports indicated that the cops were pursuing the suspect after he reportedly chopped off his neighbour’s hand in Gesima, Kisii county.

Security officers ambushed the suspect after receiving a tip-off on his whereabouts.

According to the area police chief, his officers woke the young man, but he turned violent, attacking one of them.

The attacked officer sustained a deep cut on the head and was rushed to hospital.

“He also suffered a fractured arm,” Bashir said. “It is then that the officer reacted and shot at the suspect to disable him before they arrested him,” Bashir added.

“The officer and the suspect were rushed to Keroka Sub County Hospital, where they were given emergency treatment before they were transferred to KTRH,” Bashir added.

Both the officer and the suspect were reported to be in stable condition.
