At least four people have been reported dead, while others incurred critical injuries after a bus heading to a wedding in Karen, Nairobi, overturned along the Meru-Nairobi Highway.
The accident occurred in Njuri in Tharaka Nithi County on Saturday morning, December 2, at around 5 am.
Reports indicated that the bus with nearly 46 passengers belonged to Ruiri Girl’s High School in Kiambu County.
Police confirmed the incident, noting that the 46 were members of Thau Methodist Church from Tigania East.
Tharaka Nithi County Disaster Manager, Alex Mugambi, added that operations were underway to rescue four more people who were trapped in the bus.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the bus rolled on the highway after one of its tyres burst, forcing the driver to lose control. Despite efforts to prevent the accident from occurring, the speeding bus swerved and overturned.
Emergency service providers rushed the injured to Chuka County Referral Hospital while the dead were ferried to a nearby morgue.
