Kenya’s real estate business has always catered for all social classes in the economic pyramid in terms of affordability and status.
A number of Kenyans mostly consider affordability when looking for houses to rent and possibly end up in small spaces that they can manage to pay for.
These types of small spaces are, in most cases, made as either bedsitters (also referred to as studio apartments) or single rooms.
In many instances, these types of houses are not subdivided at construction. It is upon whoever occupies them to play around with the space as they wish to – subdividing them, for instance, for privacy reasons.
Apart from creating some private space out of the free space in bedsitters and single rooms, subdividing them also adds some aesthetics to the otherwise not-so-appealing appearance.
Here is how you can do that without closing up your space permanently.
You could achieve this by getting creative and adding a room divider that can easily be moved when the need arises.
A room divider is a screen or piece of furniture placed in a way that divides a room into separate areas. In other words, room dividers are used to divide a space into separate distinct areas.
Some of the creative ways include;
- Room divider shelves
Here, you use open furniture, such as cabinets, bookcases or shelving to create different zones, without cutting out light or making the space feel closed in.
To play around with the aesthetics of the room, you could also place scented diffusers and candles, or succulents and other plants to enhance the air quality of the room.
- Room divider doors
Various kinds of doors could be used in this instance to divide up the space.
A bi-fold door that can open as fully as you would like, a sliding door, or a space-saving pocket sliding door, which fits into a wall cavity when opened could be helpful when dividing a space.
Framed glass doors could also be a good choice because they do not obstruct the light into the space and, therefore, keeping the visual design of the room even more appealing.
- Room divider curtains
Curtains are quick and easy to put up and a budget-friendly option too. Curtains are, basically, a quick fix when screening off certain areas in the house.
These room separators are perfect for zoning open-plan layouts or compact spaces and can add some much-needed colour and texture to your space.
You could use a curtain to separate your workspace from your bedroom, enabling you to conceal your study space at the end of the working day. You can also use a curtain as a door to conceal a storage nook.
All you will need is either a curtain wire or a curtain rail to hold your curtains in place.
