  • Citizen TV’s Serfine Achieng scooped the coveted Human Rights Reporting Award at the second annual Journalist Human Rights Media Awards.

In the colourful event held on Friday evening, December 9, Achieng emerged as the best in the TV category.

“Truly, there is a God in Heaven. Thank you for the recognition,” the journalist happily stated.

Also, in her acceptance speech, she encouraged her colleagues to emphasise telling stories that impact lives.

“This is just a push to go out there and tell stories of those in society without a voice. If we do not tell these stories in the best way we can, no one will,” she added.

In 2021, Achieng won the Human Rights Journalist of the Year Award and the Health Reporting Award from the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) in 2022.

The anchor is an alumnus of Journalists for Human Rights, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, the Association of Media Women in Kenya and the Media Council of Kenya.

Achieng previously worked at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) and holds a Bachelor of Science in Media Science.

Meanwhile, other journalists in the print media industry were also recognised in the annual Journalist Human Rights Media Awards.

From Nation Media Group (NMG), Moraa Obiria won in the print category. Nancy Ogutu from The Star was the first runners-up in the same category.

Rosemary Onchari from Shahidi News was the third runners-up. The event’s theme was Truth to Power: The Role of CSOs and the media.
