  • Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o took quick action after the story of a top Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) student who was denied a bursary reached him.

In a statement dated Monday, February 6, the governor stated that he noted the story after it went viral on electronic media.

The name of Juma Adhiambo Jane, a student who scored 393 marks in 2022 KCPE, was removed from a list of successful bursary applications in East Kano Wawidhi Ward in Nyando Sub-County.

“It was reported that Juma Adhiambo Jane who got 393 marks in KCPE had her name replaced with another applicant, upon getting these reports the county executive Committee member for Education, Technical Training, Innovation, and Technical Services John Awiti Convened an agent meeting to resolve the matter,” he announced.

After extensive deliberation, Awiti who was with his public service and county administration counterpart Judith Oluoch gave out directives in favor of the needy student.

“East Kano Wawidhi ward Bursary Committee was to be dissolved with immediate effect for failing to follow bursary issuance guidelines.

That the name of the needy candidate be unconditionally reinstated into the list of beneficiaries and her bursary letter  of commitment be prepared urgently to enable her report to Bunyore Girls high school

Ward administrators across the county remain nonpartisan in the processing the distribution of bursaries and scholarships,” the governor noted in a statement signed by the Kisumu county chief of staff John Oywa.

Issuance of bursaries across different counties and constituencies has been ongoing as students join secondary school.

In Nairobi, Governor Johnson Sakaja announced that he would be sponsoring students through a Ksh1 Billion Scholarship Programme.

In what will be a relief to parents and guardians in Nairobi, in this academic year, Sakaja disclosed that he would distribute a total of Ksh1,025,000,000 in Executive Scholarships and Ward bursaries.

This also saw Members of Parliament (MPs) on Monday, January 23, storming out of the Parliamentary Committee members’ retreat in Mombasa over the delayed disbursement of the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).
