YouTube Announces Ksh11B Fund Targeting Kenyans; How to Apply

  • Kenyan content creators and artists now have a chance to advance their careers after YouTube opened applications for the Black Voices Fund (BVF) Class of 2023.

    In a statement dated June 20, the video streaming platform announced that the fund, which is valued at Ksh11 billion, is aimed at amplifying Black perspectives and experiences.

    It targets creators, artists, songwriters, and producers from Kenya, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Nigeria, South Africa, United Kingdom, and the United States.

    “We also wanted to directly support Black creators, artists, songwriters and producers so they can be equipped with the resources to thrive here on YouTube.

    “Our hope is to continue to support and celebrate these creators as they show their talent and uniqueness throughout our platform,” read the statement in part.

    The fund is also aimed at celebrating the Black joy and elevating authentic stories on YouTube.

    Applications are open till Friday, July 10, 2022.

    How to Apply

    Interested candidates are advised to submit their applications through .

    They will be expected to indicate whether they are YouTube creators, artists or songwriters/producers. Applicants are also expected to provide their stage names.

    Applicants will be required to complete a form with their personal information including physical location as well as email addresses. They must be black creators.

    Successful applicants will be notified by October 2022.

    They will also benefit from dedicated support from a YouTube Partner Manager and have seed funding invested into the development of their channel.

    Other benefits are access to exclusive sessions focused on production, community engagement and well-being as well as bespoke training sessions, workshops and networking opportunities throughout the year.

    Since the programme was founded in 2020, 300 black creators hailing from the United States, Kenya, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Australia, South Africa and Nigeria have been accepted.
