  • Suna East MP, Junet Mohamed, has announced that he will retire from active politics when Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga becomes the President of Kenya.

Addressing attendees at a National Youth Council forum on Friday, January 21, the vocal lawmaker stated that he had served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for 10 years and was working to ensure that Raila clinches the presidency.

He noted that after the Prime Minister becomes the President of Kenya his work will be done and he will call it a day.

“I have been an MP for 10 years. So, I have spent all my life in politics. I now want to retire after five more years. In fact, I want to retire with Raila after he completes his term as President (2027).

“I want to urge the young people to aspire and take up electoral seats to solve our challenges. For me, all I want is to retire from active politics just like my political father Raila,” he remarked.

Further, Junet urged Kenyans to turn out in large numbers and register as voters and not wait to be persuaded with incentives.

“Some people argue that they don’t see the need to participate in the electoral process. I foresee a scenario whereby, after one to two elections to come, some Kenyans will start asking politicians to facilitate them to go and register as voters.

“These people will think that politicians are the ones who are interested in their votes,” The Suna East MP stated, explaining that voting should be in the best interest of the mass and not leaders.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) rolled out the second and final phase of Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) on Monday, January 17, in preparation for the August 9 General Election. The process will end on Sunday, February 6.

Chairman, Wafula Chebukati, stated that the commission received additional funding from the National Treasury to facilitate the exercise.

IEBC is targeting to register 4.5 million new voters who were left out in the first phase that was carried out from October 4 to November 5, 2021.

1,519,294 eligible Kenyans registered as new voters in the first phase against the then target of 6 million.
