  • United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Chairman Johnson Muthama has changed tune on remarks he had made earlier claiming that there was no coalition agreement between UDA, Amani National Congress (ANC) and Ford Kenya.

In a statement released on Monday, January 31, the former Machakos Senator noted that local media houses had taken his statement out of context, adding that the coalition agreement between UDA, ANC and Ford Kenya was there although not finalised.

Muthama explained that the leaders of the three parties; William Ruto (UDA), Musalia Mudavadi (ANC) and Moses Wetangula (Ford Kenya) had agreed to work together and were finalising the details of the agreement.

“The Coalition agreement between UDA, ANC and Ford Kenya although not yet concluded is in works. Our coming together was informed by issues which our parties consider cardinal and have agreed upon. Details of agreement are on the works.

“Issues on fielding of candidates will be addressed when finer details of agreement has been worked out,” Muthama’s statement read in part.

He also stated that the three parties had agreed to focus on people issues, agenda and progress of the economy and the country’s debt status.

The veteran politician, who has declared his interest in the Machakos Gubernatorial seat, revealed that issues such as fielding of candidates would be addressed at a later date.

Muthama caused a storm earlier today after stating that ANC, UDA and Ford Kenya were just friends who were brought together by the need to work together and unite the country.

He added that if the polls were held today, Mudavadi would seek the presidency as the ANC candidate while DP Ruto would fly the UDA flag.

“As far as we are concerned, Ruto is the UDA presidential candidate, and Musalia Mudavadi is the presidential candidate of ANC, in other words, we are independent but talking as friends.

“We are friends, when the time of agreeing on the coalition terms we will deal with it. Our supporters wherever you are, know that your party had no coalition agreement it has not signed any and if that will be done later alone you will be notified,” he remarked.

The DP’s allies have continued to issue contradicting statements on the details of the agreement signed by the three principals in the Kenya Kwanza Alliance which has been nicknamed the earthquake coalition.

On January 23, Ruto pledged to work with Mudavadi, Wetangula and other leaders who were ready to team up with them in the run-up to the General Elections.

“We will work with ANC, Ford Kenya and all other parties that want to walk this journey of bringing Kenyans together.

“We are going to raise the bar and standards of leadership so that deceit and conman ship doesn’t become part of the equation of leadership in Kenya. Kenya must belong to everyone and not a preserve of a few in power,” the DP stated.
