  • Embu Governor and the Chairman of the Council of Governors (CoG) Chairman Martin Wambora is hellbent on staying in political power after unveiling his bid for the county’s Senatorial race.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, February 16, the two-term Governor announced that he had settled on the position, which is considered to be of a lower influence than what he holds, after consulting the region’s leaders.

He noted that he would contest for the seat under the Umoja na Maendeleo (Unity and Development) Party.

“I have met with various Embu County grassroots leaders and I have heard from the electorate and they have assured me of support in my senatorial bid as well growing Umoja na Maendeleo party’s reach,” he stated.

Speaking on his two-term reign at the county, he explained that he had made some achievements including the transformation of Embu Level V Hospital into a state-of-the-art medical facility.

To stay in power, however, Wambora has had to contend with a lot of discontentment surrounding his leadership – earning him the proverbial description of a cat with nine lives.

In 2014, the Embu county boss made history by becoming the first Governor to be impeached under the new constitution. The impeachment, though endorsed by the Senate never materialised and dragged on in courts until his first term ended in 2017.

He had been accused of disregarding the county’s leadership and hiring individuals without the approval of the assembly.

In 2019, the MCAs also reopened plans to impeach the governor over the poor development record but he survived.

Later, he thrived by being elected the chairman of the Council of Governors (CoG) in January 2021. A position he retains to date.

Wambora joins Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga who opted to vie for the Senate seat in his home county.
