UK Police Question Kenya’s Ex-Presidential Aspirant Over Terror Financing

  • A former Kenyan presidential aspirant is now in the crosshairs of the Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom after the officers questioned him over allegations of terror financing.

In a statement to media houses on Saturday, January 29, the 2013  presidential contender Jaffer Isaak Sora noted that he received a call from the UK police on Wednesday, January 26 accusing him of being behind the financing of Al Shabaab terror activities.

He noted that the two officers who approached him confirmed to him that the Kenyan authorities had informed them that he (Isaak) sold marijuana to raise the finances.

“On January 26th, 2022, at about 10 am UK time, I received a phone call from metropolitan police. They requested an appointment with them at my home to clear something with me. I agreed to meet them at the home by 2 pm. Then, two plain-clothed officers from counter-terror police came.

“As absurd as it may sound, the two police officers informed me that they have received information from Kenya that I was selling marijuana and using the money to fund Al-Shabaab terror group based in Somalia,” he stated.

Isaak, however, refuted the claims noting that he was not a criminal and invited the UK police to conduct extensive investigations of him and his family.

He noted that the UK gave him a second chance after he was forced to flee Kenya where he was accused of egregious crimes and where his family remains a target of the authorities.

For instance, he claimed, in June 2021, the police obtained a search warrant, raided his home in Nairobi and ransacked it in an activity he believes left his children traumatised.

“I trust and respect UK’s institutions. They are free to investigate me not only for that one fake allegation but actually investigate me for almost the two decades I resided in the UK. I have nothing to hide as I am an honest and hard-working person.

“This great nation (UK) gave me an opportunity to feed my family and others by extension. Above all granted me an opportunity to further my education and as we speak I am in the final semester of my M.Sc. Global Politics, Governance and Security,” he added.

During the June 16, 2021, raid, the politician’s lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, confirmed that the family had been harassed before the ransack occurred.

The former army man has been at loggerheads with the Kenyan authorities since he was arrested while allegedly transporting 445 kilograms of bhang worth Ksh13 million in 2019.

In his statement, Isaak also confirmed that in 2018, shortly after touching down from the UK to save his political party from deregistration, he was captured and taken to Ngong forest where he was tortured and threatened before being taken to the Parklands police station in Nairobi.
