President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday, December 8, sent out a stern warning following the arrest of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

Speaking at the St. Francis of Assis Parish Church in Ruiru, Kiambu County, the president distanced himself from any leader accused of corrupt dealings, reiterating that he would not be taking calls from the accused.

Wakati ulikuwa unafanya mambo ya ufisadi, hukuwa na familia, hukuwa na jamii, uliiba peke yako, beba msalaba pekee yako,” losely translating to, When you were carrying out your corrupt dealing, you never had your family nor your community beside you. You stole alone so just carry your own cross,” he stated.

“Each individual is innocent until he/she is proven guilty and there are legal channels established in the country to iron out such cases,” he added.

President Uhuru Kenyatta during a prayer session at the St. Francis of Assis Parish Church in Ruiru, Kiambu, December 8, 2019.

In his address, Uhuru stressed that a strong and progressive nation is determined by its people working together in unity and therefore urged Kenyans to strengthen the family unit as the foundation of a cohesive nation.

“If the country is built on good family values especially those that lay emphasis on unity, peace, and love, then it will prosper but if it doesn’t focus on these values it will not grow,” he explained.

Reports from the President’s Strategic Communication Unit (PSCU) indicated that the president, who attended mass at the church, made a sizeable donation to aid in the completion of a new church block that would accommodate 2,000 congregants.

The Jubilee party leader assured the worshippers of his solid commitment to the ongoing fight against corruption, and urged leaders to desist from politicising the war on graft.

He then went on to make a special plea for Kenyans to join hands and fight corruption, which he singled out as the greatest impediment to the country’s growth.

Here’s a short clip of Uhuru’s fiery remarks following Sonko’s arrest:
