The Head of State made the announcement vide a Gazette Notice dated Thursday, April 14, in which he elevated Mworia to serve for a period of 5 years.
The appointment takes effect starting on Saturday, April 23, 2022.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, appoint James Mworia (Dr) to be the Chancellor of Machakos University, for a period of five years, with effect from April 23, 2022,” read the notice in part.
Up to his appointment, Mworia has been the CEO of the quoted investment firm in East Africa, Centum Investment Company Limited.
He joined the company in 2001 as an intern after acquiring a Law Degree from the University of Nairobi among other achievements and rose up the ranks to become its CEO.
“My approach to life is that anything I have today, that is the best I have, and that is the opportunity I take. When I was an intern, the first job I had was in the filing room. I could have looked at that filing job and said it was below my capability; that I am a graduate and I should not be doing filing. But when I went into that room I said, ‘what is the opportunity here.’ And the opportunity for me was to learn about the business.
“I really took time to study the files. Two months down the road, we were raising capital and the CEO decided to administer a quiz about the company. I scored the highest marks because I had been reading. And that is how I was identified and got a job,” stated Mworia in a past interview chronicling his rise.
Since formally joining the white-collar workforce, the CEO has held various roles including serving as the chairman at Sidian Bank as well as a non-executive director at the Nairobi Stock Exchange.
In the Gazette Notice, Transport Cabinet Secretary, James Macharia, also appointed Philemon Kiprop Kandie as Director General of Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA). He is expected to hold the capacity for five years.
Macharia also appointed Joyce Nyambura Mundara as a member of the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) Board, for a period of three years.
Kandie’s role took effect on April 13 while that of Mundara kicked off on April 11, 2022.
