Third CS Resigns From Uhuru’s Cabinet

  • East African Community (EAC) Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohamed on Monday, February 8, stepped down from the position to focus on the upcoming August 9 General Election.

    In a public statement,  Mohamed noted that he was eyeing the Mandera Gubernatorial seat and wanted to dedicate time to launch his campaigns.

    He thanked the Head of State for according him the opportunity and listed down some of the achievements he made in the Ministries that he held.

    “I take this opportunity to thank H.E. the President for the opportunity to serve the great people of Kenya under his leadership over the last 9 years as Cabinet Secretary.

    “During this period, we have achieved significant milestones in the Ministries of Industry and Trade, Agriculture and finally in East African Community and Regional Development. Some notable achievements include the development of Kenya’s Industrialisation Roadmap, the pioneer National Export Strategy as well as negotiations and conclusion of key trade agreements,” he explained.

    The former banker was one of four CSs who have been in President Kenyatta’s Cabinet since he assumed office in 2013. Others who have served since the inaugural Cabinet are Fred Matiang’i (Interior), Raychelle Omamo (Foreign Affairs), James Macharia (Health), and Amina Mohamed (Sports). 

    Some of the trade agreements Adan spearheaded included the European Partnership Agreement (EPA),  the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the remarkable transformation of Kenya’s Business and Investment Climate.

    He also thanked his colleagues in the Cabinet and staff in the Ministries that he interacted with during his 9-year stint.

    “As we approach the General Election in August 2022, I have considered options on the future roles I can play in the development of our country and reached the decision to run for the position of Governor, Mandera County.

    “I extend my appreciation to all colleagues at the Cabinet that I have worked with, as well as staff across the various Ministries that I served during the period and wish them well as we support the development of our nation,” he added.

    He noted that he handed in his resignation on Tuesday afternoon. With the resignation, he becomes the third CS to exit from the government as per a directive by the Court of Appeal compelling all civil servants seeking elective posts to quit from their roles by Wednesday, February 9, 2022.

    The other two are former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter and his Petroleum counterpart John Munyes.

    Keter will be vying for the Kericho gubernatorial seat while Munyes is angling for the Turkana County gubernatorial seat.
