  • A taxi driver was on Sunday, February 21, was forced to step in and help a female passenger he was carrying to deliver a baby.

The woman who had hailed the taxi to rush her to the hospital, went into labour at the back seat of the car prompting the driver to step in and help.

The taxi driver parked the car along the Chepkoilel-Eldoret Road and with the help of two other women who arrived at the scene – helped the woman to deliver the baby.

A boda boda rider who had also stopped to witness, filmed the incident from behind the Suzuki cab.

After a successful delivery, the onlookers who had gathered applauded the driver who then drove the woman to the nearest hospital.

The man received praises from many Kenyans among them Bomet Woman Rep Joyce Korir for his courageous and kind act.

A healthcare worker who spoke to kenyagist.com stated that it is important for expecting mothers to be aware of signs of birth to prevent such emergencies from happening by visiting a hospital early enough.

“In a case where you find yourself in such a situation try to get the mother to a hospital as fast as possible or call an ambulance. If the baby has already started coming out then prepare yourself to support its head to prevent them from getting hurt,†the medic advised emphasising the importance of hygiene.

One should not pull on the baby’s head or body but instead, let the labour contractions do the work.

Immediately after the baby is delivered, it’s important to place the newborn on its mom’s chest directly on the skin.

After skin-to-skin contact is initiated, the baby should be gently dried off with a clean towel or dry piece of clothing and covered up.

It is important to let medical professionals handle the cutting of the umbilical cord and placenta due to the risk of infection.

If unsure about the process, one can call a healthcare worker who can guide them through the steps.
