  • Thugs in Nairobi are using a new form of trick to trail and rob city residents who own and drive vehicles to and from work.

The revelations were made following a viral video seen by kenyagist.com, which showed telephone records retrieved from a mobile phone confiscated from a suspected criminal who had trailed a woman to her residence in Nyayo Estate Embakasi on Wednesday, April 28.

Sources indicated that the thieves trail their targets for days – or even weeks – as they drive home to establish a pattern before they can strike.

The phone records revealed how the suspect had followed the woman – and other previous targets – keeping a catalog on all their information.

The incident that happened at Nairobi’s Nyayo estate left residents in shock – as a guard restrained the suspect who appeared to have done his homework well and keying in details.

The thugs are said to target high end estates in Nairobi. Nyayo Estate has over 5,000 houses which is home to over 30,000 residents.

The suspect is said to have posed as a businessperson trying to sell an investment idea a lady, only to turn out that this was a well-orchestrated ploy to distract and steal from her.

“The thugs are very thorough in their details.

“They dive into specifics making sure no detail is left out. i.e KCX …B  lady (late night) KCR …T, White Land Rover  KDB …T, Silver Subaru( woman driving). The prying does not end there, they go as far as finding out what house you live in,” said a source who did not wish to be named.

In September last year, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations shed light on how criminals were increasingly targeting car hire services in Nairobi.

“They approach a car hire service, give fake documents after which they drive off never to be seen again. Since the cars have a tracking system, they will disable the gadgets disposing them in Tanzania,” the police had said.

According to the police, the criminals preferred hired vehicles as it is easier to cross the border with documents they obtain from the firms.

According to a recent report by Association Of Kenya Insurers, insurance companies report at least 100 cars as stolen monthly.
