  • Chuka Students have come out in large to defend their Vice-chancellor Professor Erastus Njoka following his grilling by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

On Tuesday, August 31, students called a press conference in defence of the VC – claiming the don was being persecuted for malicious reasons.

They added that the EACC probe was affecting learning in the university.

“We are not very happy over the propaganda spreading on fake papers on our VC Erastus. It affects undergraduate and postgraduate students.

“The accusation means that our degree and master certificates are fake when you state that our Professor’s papers are fake,” one General Apopo stated.

According to the EACC, the investigation was over a tip on fake degree certificates acquired from the People’s Friendship University of Russia based in Moscow.

“Stop intimidating our one and only professor. If you are looking for evidence, go to the People’s Friendship University of Russia,† the student responded.

When summoning the professor previously, the head of Eastern Region EACC, George Ojowi told the media they had recorded a statement from the VC and had gotten relevant documents.

“He has provided us with the documents we needed. We will analyze the information and prepare a report that will be forwarded to DPP for action,” Ojowi stated.

Njoka has declared interest in becoming the next Governor of Tharaka Nithi in the 2022 General Election.

Following his declaration on August 8, things turned for worse after clashes between his supporters and those of incumbent Governor Muthumi Njoki.

The students read politics in the EACC probe.

“If the professor is a political threat as comrades we will remain firm and ensure till the last vote that the Professor clinches the seat,†the students declared.
