Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko on Sunday, September 29, issued a fresh directive to all building owners following the tragic collapse of Precious Talent Top School that left 8 dead 64 injured.

His message was read on his behalf by County Secretary Leboo Ole Morintat, who went on to reveal that the county government was launching a major crackdown on rooftop private schools that fell below the industry standards.

In addition, the city boss warned building owners against renting out rooms for private schools without following the proper procedure.

Nairobi County Communication Director, Elkana Jacob, while speaking to kenyagist.com, revealed that Sonko contributed Ksh 100,000 to each of the families that lost their loved ones following the tragic accident at the school.

Dagoretti South residents and Kenya Red Cross Society workers during the rescue efforts of pupils trapped after a two-storey building collapsed at Precious Talent School on Monday, September 23.

The Nairobi governor then called on the national government to work closely with the county to solve challenges in the education sector.

He urged the Education Ministry to organise a consultative meeting to discuss and find solutions to the education crisis in the city.

The city boss lamented the scarcity of public schools and the mushrooming of private schools, which he claims could in the future explode into a major crisis.

In his message to the families who lost their children in the tragic incident at Precious Talent Academy, Sonko made it clear that his administration is ready for consultations that will help solve the current challenges ailing the sector.

While he acknowledged that primary and secondary education is a mandate of the national government, Sonko said the county cannot be left out in the streamlining of sector policies that can lead to improved education standards.

“We have to work together to ensure that we can give long-lasting solutions that will guarantee our children quality and reliable education by building more schools that are up to standard,” he stated.

The Nairobi county head recently dismissed suspended 16 of his top county officials over alleged corruption, adding that he had unearthed some rogue elements within the Urban Planning Department.
