Gunmen suspected to be Al-Shabab militants sprayed bullets on a car that was ferrying the 50-year old woman and her son who survived with a gunshot wound.
The militia had targeted their private car that was ferrying three people from Fino to Mandera town.
Police reports confirmed the woman died on the spot while the other two sustained injuries from the attack. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the heinous act.
The 35-year-old man who was accompanying his mother was shot on his thigh and is currently admitted to Mandera County Referral Hospital with reports stating that he was in stable condition.
The driver was treated in the same hospital and discharged when the medics ascertained that he was out of danger.
The deceased’s body was taken to Mandera County Referral Hospital morgue for postmortem after which it shall be released to the family for burial as per Islamic rites.
A few hours later, the militants yet again opened fire on another vehicle at the outskirts of Fino in Mandera County killing a man and his son on the spot.
According to police reports, the two were killed after the gunmen sprayed bullets on their car.
Police have beefed up security in the area and are conducting investigations in a bid to nab the unknown assailants suspected to be Al-Shabab.
This attack comes at a time the President signed a Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) to tackle shared security threats across East Africa.
Kenya’s CS for Defence, Dr Monica Juma, and UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace signed the new DCA on July 27, 2021 evening at the Ministry of Defence offices in London.
