A 29-year-old set book actor was on Tuesday evening arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for allegedly raping a Form Two student at Moi Girls’ School on June 2, 2018.
The arrest comes almost a year after teachers reportedly dismissed the incident claiming it was a made up story by the students who wanted to go home.
According to the DCI’s statement on Twitter, the suspect  Marcelas Olale Ogola, was positively identified by the 16-year-old victim.
‚ÄúDetectives handling the case are carrying out further inquiries including DNA analysis to scientifically link the suspect to the offense,‚ÄĚ the ¬†DCI‚Äôs statement read.
Initial investigations by the DCI revealed that the suspect was among a team of actors that had previously visited the school to perform plays.
The student had told the police that on the night of the rape, she was going to the washrooms at 2.30am when she was assaulted.
“The man asked me where I was going and I told him that I was going to the toilet. I left and he proceeded in the opposite direction. Later, when I was already in the toilet he flash-opened the door and warned me not to scream.
‚ÄúHe grabbed me, pulled me towards the area and then raped me,‚ÄĚ the girl told the DCI detectives.¬†
Following investigations by the National Assembly committee, Dr Kanyi, a gynecologist based at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital, examined the 16-year-old girl and confirmed that she was raped.
Furthermore, the House Committee disclosed through a report that on the night of the incident, there was inter-houses drama competition in the school that extended up to 8pm.
‚ÄúThe coaches and adjudicators for the activity were non-teachers engaged by the school administration contrary to section 23 (2) of the TSC Act on supervision and management of the co-curricular activities in schools,‚ÄĚ read the report which criticized the school for laxity in securing the girls.¬†
The suspect is currently being held up at Kilimani Police Station awaiting the Government Chemist to collect samples from him.
