  • Deputy President William Ruto has responded to allegations by President Uhuru Kenyatta that he attempted to overthrow him after the August 2017 elections.

Speaking in Malindi, Kilifi County, on Sunday, March 27, Ruto rubbished the claims by his boss, stating that he would not do such and that the idea itself had never crossed his mind.

The DP explained that he was always loyal to Uhuru and that he would never overstep his role and mandate as his deputy for whatever reason.

“As Deputy President, I know what I must do. I will never, I have never an and it has never happened that I will be part of anything that government of Kenya and those who are spreading those lies, shame on you!” he declared.

He asked those propagating such claims of having malicious intentions adding that he was not insane to try and topple the very government that he worked hard to ensure ascended and retain power in 2013 and 2017 respectively.

“You must be confusing me with your project. I am a man of sound mind, I am not a mad man nor a drunkard to turn against the very government that I helped put in power. Who helped Uhuru to become president in 2013 and 2017 if not me?” Ruto posed.

The DP added that the claims were an attack on his persona and demanded respect. He further called out those opposing his presidential bid to stop using propaganda adding that they risk dividing Kenyans

“Please my friends, have some respect even if you do not want to support my candidature, stop it with the unfounded claims, stop dividing Kenyans. You want to split the country for nothing just because Kenyans have refused your project?” He questioned.

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) presidential aspirant slammed Azimio la Umoja’s Raila Odinga, stating that he was synonymous with attempting to overthrow governments, quoting the 1992 attempted coup.

Ruto’s sentiments were reiterated by Kilifi member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa, who lashed out at the President for the remarks. Jumwa asked the Head of State to stop maligning his deputy, warning that he will most likely suffer the same betrayal.

Earlier, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria urged Kenyatta to back the DP’s bid to succeed him. Kuria argued that if the President endorsed Odinga, who publicly swore himself in as the people’s president, then he should also support Ruto.

The reactions come after reports emerged that the outgoing president, in a meeting with elders from the Mount Kenya region, accused Ruto of going behind his back and allegedly plotting his ouster through an impeachment.
